On July 17th, 1918, Russia’s last Imperial Family, Tsar Nicholas II, his wife, Alexandra, and their five children Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexey were all murdered brutally in Ekaterinburg, Western Serbia.

This event went down in history as one of the most infamous acts of the Russian Revolution. It was an act that incited terror, turmoil, and murder as Russia went into a bitter civil war between the Bolshevik government and the remnants of the old order. In the

years that followed since 1918, much has been written in the West about the tragic family, but most published work on the Romanov family till now were focused only on two flawed rulers, Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra.

Their love story and horrifying massacre and their fall from great power which was their own making. Other interests were also focused on their son and only heir, Alexei, whose life was stained by haemophilia which was passed unknowingly to him by his mother.

The four lovely sisters who became involved in this story but were kept in the shadows were the mainstay and support of their frequently sick mother and brother, as well as their loyal attachment to their

father the Tsar. Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia were consigned to history because they were portrayed as boring and bland, even though their were fair in face but their lives was of little interest to historian’s.

July 2018 marked the hundredth anniversary of the murder of these sisters and the Russian Orthodox church canonised them along with their parents in 1981. After the fall of communism ten years later, they began appearing with growing popularity in a

proliferation of new icons that can now be seen in churches across Russia. These four beautiful sisters, in their white lace dresses and big picture hats have been immortalised in hundreds of photographs of the Romanov family which were preserved in the State

archives. These sisters presents an unvarnished account of their story and seeks to restore them to their central role in the life of Russia’s Imperial Family.
