Teaching is a “nice” profession. Teachers are very essential. In Ghana, they form the largest and most powerful government workforce.
Sadly, most students do not want to become teachers in the future. Why? Let’s explore students’ most common reasons:
1. Poor example from teachers
Some teachers are well-behaved. That’s true. But there are also many of them whose bad behavior makes the profession unattractive to students. Common behavior problem s such as drunkenness, sexual indiscipline, etc., are often seen in many teachers. This makes students dislike teaching as a profession.
2. Poor pay
Teachers are among the least paid government workers in Ghana. The case of private school teachers is even more horrible.
Income is a major determinant of why a child may choose this or that career. Students know that teachers’ pay is not that attractive, so they the students shy away from becoming a teacher.
3. Stressful Work
Students pity their teachers for the stress they go through in the effort of getting knowledge into the minds of students. Most students and parents admit that teaching can be very stressful.
Aside the classroom work, many parents applaud teachers for their ability to manage today’s stubborn students. The students themselves know these things, and they are not ready to pass through that stress in the future.
