One of Britain’s greatest iconic and long-reigning monarch’s, Queen Victoria was an era-defining figure whose fascinating life has continued to inspire storytellers till today. Some people only know Queen Victoria as a long-reigning monarch, there are plenty more fascinating facts about her which will surprise. Let’s check out some of these facts below.

i. Her First Name Was Not Victoria

Queen Victoria was born in Kensington Palace on May 24, 1819 and was originally named Alexandrian Victoria, after her godfather, Tsar Alexander I but she always preferred to go by her second name or

nickname “Drina”. At birth, she was the fifth in line of succession for the British crown, coming behind the four oldest son’s of George III, her three uncles and her father, Edward.

ii. She Became Queen At 18 And Was Barely 5 Feet Tall

Victoria was woken from her bed at 6 a.m. on June 20, 1837 and was informed that her uncle, King William IV had suffered from a heart attack and died

during the night. In less than a month after turning eighteen, Victoria was made Queen. She was four inches shorter than Queen Elizabeth II making her less than five feet tall.

iii. She Proposed To Her Husband

On her seventeenth birthday party, then Princess Victoria met her first cousin, Prince Albert Of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Four years later, now the Queen, she proposed to Prince Albert on October 15, 1839 and they got married on February 10, 1840 in the Chapel Royal of St. James Palace in London.

She was deeply in love with Albert and after they were married, she claimed to be truly happy for the first time in her life. After their wedding night, she wrote in her diary “I never, never spent such an

evening!! My dearest dearest dear Albert…his excessive love and affection gave me feelings of heavenly love and happiness I never could have hoped to have felt before!”
