Hannibal Barca was one of the greatest general’s ever seen in the world, who crossed the Alps and nearly brought great Rome to it’s knees. He was also known as Hannibal of Carnage and he was one of Rome’s greatest but most respected enemies. After he took command of an army at the age of twenty-five, he launched an ambitious campaign on the Alps and attacked Rome itself.

After fifteen years of campaigning and and a strategically brilliant victory at Canne, Hannibal had to retreat to defend his city against a Roman invasion. After he lost the battle, he was made a scapegoat for Carthage’s defeat and exiled but even in exile, be continued to oppose the Romans until his death. Here are some interesting facts about the life of this great conquerer.

i. He Took Command Of An Army At 25 Years Old

After he got the mercenaries under his control, Hamilcar planned to take them to Spain and Hannibal who was nine at that time begged to accompany his father, who agreed on one condition. He made Hannibal swear an oath that he would never befriend a Roman and Hannibal agreed.

Hannibal spent sixteen years growing up around the army, learning how to command soldiers and employ great attacks. At twenty-three, he was given command of the Calvary and he proved his worth as an officer.

During the campaign, his father was killed in 228 BC while fighting in Spain and Hannibal’s brother-in-law, Hasdrubal took the mantle but was assassinated in 221 BC and Hannibal took over command of the army.

ii. He Died Surrounded In His Villa

Hannibal was granted sanctuary in the court of Prusias I, the king of Bithynia and in 183 BC after his exile, the Romans closed in on Prusias and he agreed to deliver Hannibal to the Romans. As the Romans surrounded his home,

Hannibal allegedly said “Let us rid the Romans of their fear of this troublesome old man” before taking in poison. In his time, Hannibal left a great legacy as Roman general’s like Scipio and Napoleon studied his tactical plans and applied them in their own battles.
