Assin North And The Supreme Court Ruling: An NDC Lawyer Has Spoken Again

A Lawyer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has spoken again; this time, for the people of Assin North, following the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Ghana, restraining their Member of Parliament (MP), Honorable James Gyekye Quayson from representing them in Parliament.

The Supreme Court, in its recent ruling has stated that, the Assin North Member Of Parliament, Honorable James Gyakye Quayson, must restrain himself from performing Parliamentary duties.

The ruling, dated Wednesday, April 13 2022 again stated stated that, “…Mr. Gyekye Quayson is restrained from attending Parliament, to conduct business on behalf of the people of Assin North. The restriction remains until the final determination of the substantive matter. We direct that the case hearing be expedited”.

The Supreme COurt’s ruling came following a ruling by the Cape Coast High Court, presided over by Justice Coram Kwasi Boakye, that Mr Gyakye Quayson was not eligible to contest the December 7, 2020, Parliamentary Elections, because he bore dual citizenship before picking nomination forms from the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

Speaking on TV3’s programme; ‘The Key Points’ Lawyer Abraham Amaliba said the people of Assin North Constituency in the Central Region of Ghana will need a representation in Parliament; and that, the restrictions placed on him by the Supreme Court is disturbing.

Lawyer Amaliba, who is also the Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), again said that, “The people of Assin North needs a representation, and that is very important. Yes, there are some restrains on him, that will not make him function as a Member of Parliament, but he still remains a Member of Parliament. That is why I have said, that there cannot be a by-election until the final determination of the substantive case”.

Do you think, that the Assin North MP was fairly treated by the Supreme Court?
