There are stories of many saints in European history and many of them led a life of holiness and purity while others were not all that saintly. I bring you today, some saints in history who were not all that ‘saintly’ in the eyes of the public.

i. Saint Augustine

Augustine Hippo or Saint Augustine is one of the most famous saints with a sinful past, which is rather surprising since his mother (Saint Monica) was a staunch Christian. He is best known for quoting “God, grant me chastity and continence, but not yet.” Augustine who was brought born at Tagaste, North Africa in AD 354, was a great Christian philosopher. He rejected his Christian teachings and upbringing to live a life of hedonism, entertainment, and worldly ambition’s. He had not one but two mistresses and an illegitimate son whom he abandoned at the thought of marrying a heiress. He enjoyed for years until he had a change of heart and ditched all his mistresses, spending the rest of his life as a priest.

ii. Saint Dismas

Saint Dismas is known popularly by an unpopular name, “The Good Thief” and was allegedly one of the thieves who ended up flanked beside Christ at his crucification. It’s believed he had a run-in with the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary and Joseph) when Jesus was an infant and together with an accomplice, held up Mary and Joseph as they flee to Egypt to escape Herod’s soldiers. Dismas is said to have been moved to compassion by the Holy Family and paid his companion forty drachmas to let them pass safely. He was the one who told Jesus to “Remember me when you come into your kingdom” and Jesus therefore forgave him his sins and promised him paradise that same day.

iii. Saint Angela of Foligno

Saint Angela was declared a saint through the procedure of equivocal canonisation by Pope Francis in 2013, but while some saints showed signs of holiness, Saint Angela was different. She was born in 1248 and became immersed in the quest for wealth and social position, even though she was the wife of high social class and a mother to many. She had a change of heart in her forties and called upon Saint Francis, who appeared in a vision to her and asked his advice. She sold all her possession’s after this and joined a secular Franciscan order in 1291.
