GES Promotion -Teachers In Ghana Express Worry About Delay In Their Promotion

Teachers within the Ghana Education Service, has expressed a deep concern about the delay in promotion to the next rank of their profession. Currently, those in junior rank Superintendent II, and those who wrote promotion exams are all expressing their worries.

In GES, matters relating to promotions, a teaching staff is promoted after serving for four years (long years of service). This applies to especially those in the lowest rank, Senior Superintendent II. If a staff however obtain a relevant degree in a prescribed course, such individual skips the four years and is promoted immediately after completion.

For staffs on the rank of Senior Superintendent II who do not pursue any course and will like to wait for the 4-year period, the work of the individual within the four year period is inspected through observation of teaching by officers at the various Municipal and District Education offices after the teacher has applied to for promotion. The officers then determined whether the staff should be promoted or otherwise.

According to the teachers who started their professional career in the year 2016, they were supposed to be promoted from Senior Superintendent II to Senior Superintended I in 2020 but till now, their promotion has not seen the light of day.

According to information available gathered from GNAT Group on Facebook and different teachers groups, most of the teachers’ who fall within the category above have gone through the exercise required for their promotion to the next rank for almost two years now but nothing has been communicated to any of them.

The other category of teachers waiting for promotion are those who wrote promotion exams. One teacher expressed “GNAT are you aware our promotion results have not been released? We have been marking time on our rank for 6 good years,is it fair to us ? GES IS FAIR TO TREAT TEACHERS LIKE THIS?”

The effect of the delay will also substantially affect their next promotions as well their salary adjustments.
