Benzema has scored 25 league goals, breaking his record for a single season in his career

Karim Benzema has scored 25 goals in “La Liga” this season, his best tally in a single league campaign in his entire Real Madrid career (24 in 2015/16).

Karim Benzema has scored the match winning goal in eight La Liga games for Real Madrid this season.

Karim Benzema has now scored 39 goals in 39 games this season.

Sevilla’s first-half performance was overshadowed by Real Madrid’s second-half heroics, as the ‘Nervionenses’ suffered their first defeat at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán this La Liga season, ending a record of 15 consecutive home victories.

One could only hope for an intriguing encounter between the Spanish titans as the team with the greatest defensive record in the division welcomed the league’s most prolific scorers.

Ivan Rakiti of Croatia opened the scoring with a spectacular through-the-wall free-kick into the bottom left corner, before Erik Lamela smacked in a low shot after the visitors capitulated to a defensive blunder during a counterattack.

Real Madrid went into the halftime break with frowns on their faces, as the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán celebrated its beloved ‘Nervionenses’ for a valiant performance.

Almost immediately after the restart, Sevilla invited Carlo Ancelotti’s men back into the game. After some great play on the left flank, Brazilian talent Rodrygo hammered an unstoppable first-time attempt into the roof of the net from close range less than five minutes into his substitute appearance.

The final quarter-hour began with sheer drama, as an erroneous VAR ruling denied Vinicius Jnior an almost-obvious goal after it was waved off for a handball, throwing the visiting bench into a frenzy.

Substitute Nacho Fernández provided some relief for the visitors just a few minutes later, driving home a low shot with his first touch of the game, making up for Vinicius’ previous disappointment.

As the final whistle approached, ‘Los Blancos’ increased the ante by scoring the winner right at the last, thanks to Champions League hero Karim Benzema, who grabbed onto Rodrygo’s inch-perfect pass to shoot the goal and give Madrid all three points.

With the triumph over Sevilla, the visitors have now won five consecutive league games on the road for the first time since November of last year.
