1. English

Lately, there are close to about 400 million native speakers and also over 800 non-native speakers. In all, we have about 1, 130 million people who speak English globally.  

2. Mandarin 

Mandarin is considered to be the second most spoken language across the globe. One thing to note is the fact that, Mandarin is actually not a language but a dialect which is of the Chinese origin. Mandarin is spoken across the northern and southwestern China. Mandarin is also widely spoken in Taiwan and Singapore. It not different from Chinese except that it is the standard form of Chinese. Mandarin is considered to be one of the most difficult languages to master in the world. You can find that about 20% of the people who connect to the internet speak Chinese. However, Chinese constitute less than 2% of everything on the web. Mandarin comes second because, as a variety of dialects, almost all speakers understand each other. In all, over about 1,117 million people speak mandarin with about 920 million and 200 million native and non-native speakers respectively. 

3. Hindi 

Do you that India has about 22 official languages? With English and Hindi inclusive, about 340 million natives speak Hindi with about 270 non-native speakers. The Hindi language is spoken by more than 2o countries outside India. They include United States, Mauritius, South Africa, Yemen, Uganda, Singapore, Pakistan, Nepal and New Zealand. Next to china, India is the second most populous country in the world with over 1 billion population.  

4. Spanish

Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world. Across Europe, Asia, Africa and America, Spanish is widely spoken among both native and non-native speakers.  Colonization and migration played a major role in the spread of the Spanish language across the world. Most tourists with Spanish background do not find as much difficulty as especially among native Spain in Europe and some African countries like Equatorial Guinea among others. There are currently about 490 native speakers and over 70 million non-native speakers.  

5. French

French culture and civilization has paved way for the spread of language across almost all the continents. Today, about 30 countries speakers French as their official language. With over 70 million native speakers and also 200 million non-native speakers respectively, it is clear that French becomes the third language with the largest number of non-native speakers. However, there are currently about 280 million French speakers across the world. French is used in some parts of Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and several countries in north and west Africa. Putting French and English on a scale, English is regarded as the language of business while French is a language of culture.   

6.Arabic

Arabic is the number one territorial language in the Arab world. Across Asia and some parts of Africa, some 26 countries speak Arabic as their official language. Arabic is actually a combination of dialects and a liturgical language of Islam. Arabic is an essential tool in the field of business in the Arab world. Arabic is spoken in countries Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.  Currently about 280 million people speak Arabic across the world with over 290 million native speakers and 30 million non-native speakers.    

7. Bengali

The official language of Bangladesh is Bengali. Bengali is spoken by about 230 million native speakers. In other parts of the world such as India and Burma, Bengali is widely spoken with over 30 million non-native speakers. Despite being a very small territory, the population density makes it possible for it to find a place among one of the most spoken languages in the world. Today, about 260 people speak Bengali across the world.   

8. Russian 

Russian is the language is the language with the greatest number of native speakers throughout the whole of Europe. In territories such as the former Soviet Union, Russian is widely spoken. Four countries speak Russian as their official language. Russian also constitutes the list of top ten most spoken languages with about 260 million speakers globally. About 150 million native speakers and over 100 million non-native speakers.  

9. Portuguese

Across the continents of Europe, America, Asia and Africa, Portuguese is spoken in nine countries as their official language. As a result of colonization, Portuguese spread in most colonies. Portuguese is spoken largely in parts of Brazil and other American countries. More than 230 million people speak Portuguese worldwide with about 220 million native speakers and also about 10 million non-native speakers. Portuguese is the official language of Angola, Brazil Cape Verde,  

10. Indonesian

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world. The official language is Bahasa Indonesia. Indonesia has about 200 languages. Although it not the native language of the people, it is the second language which fosters easy communication and understanding. Almost 95 percent of the people speak Indonesian. About 200 million people speak Indonesia. Interestingly, there about 160 non-native speakers than about 40 million native speakers.
