A Victim Of 2012 Melcom Building Collapse Narrates How He Survived When The Disaster Occurred

A man known as Derrick was a victim of 2012 melcom building collapsed narrates his story about how he survived. He said he was raised by both his mother and stepfather, at first his mother told him his biological father is a military man, he later travelled abroad. One day his father came to visit them, he only gave him GHC10 and some tubers of yam.

Derick continued that he was working at melcome and was on the second floor, he was among the sales staff in 2012, they were having morning devotion and all of a sudden the building collapsed, he was stuck under the collapse building, the man said he prayed to God and asked for forgiveness and they were under the building till the next morning before they were rescued.

He said they were able to hear their voices under the building, their manager too encouraged them that they will be rescued, all that they were doing was singing. Some of his colleagues were able to crawl through a hole and get out but one of his leg was stuck under a box so he couldn’t crawl to follow them, he then slept till the next morning. Some people came to rescue them, they struggled to pull him out but they couldn’t. Derrick told them to cut off the leg so that he could move out of the building.

They tried hard before he was able to pull his leg out. When the doctor examined him Derick was told there was no movement of blood in his leg. He used crutches for about one year before he was able to walk with his leg. The man said he was given GHC5,000 as percent of injuries and GHC10,000 were given to the family of those who lost their lives through the disaster. After recovering from the injuries he went back to work but he still experienced in his leg, this made him stopped working. He spent some time before he moved on in life.
