Nokia was not always in high-tech, indeed, in 40 years, the mobile phone company Nokia has gone from being a manufacturer of toilet paper to that of a leader in the world of global telecommunications.

Nokia was founded in 1865 in southern Finland as a pulp company.

Nokia was once a manufacturer of toilet paper!

Over the decades, the company expanded into emerging industries such as power generation and telephone manufacturing. In the 1960s, Nokia was known for manufacturing toilet paper. But in the late 1980s, Nokia turned to telecommunications

By the 2000s, the company was so powerful that it dominated the economy in its home country of Finland. At that time, the value of Nokia’s net sales was about the same as the Finnish government’s annual budget. At its peak, Nokia was around 60% of the value of the Helsinki Stock Exchange.

We all know the Nokia company, especially for the 3310. Indeed, Nokia became known through the manufacture of mobile phones. Additionally, Nokia is behind the first phones in cars. But did you know that before becoming a leader in telephony, Nokia sold toilet paper?

Nokia was founded in 1865. At that time, the Finnish engineer Fredrik Idestam built his first paper mill in Tampere. Three years later, the thriving small business moved to Nokia, hence the name of the firm, on the banks of the Nokianvirta river. The manufacture of toilet paper, but also electrical energy become the two main areas of expertise of the Finnish company.

Then, in 1918, Nokia and the Finnish Rubber Company came together, and so began the production of tires and boots. In the years that followed, the Finnish company grew. Indeed, thanks to an acquisition of Suomen Kaapelitehdas Oy (Cable Company), Nokia can now transport the electricity it produces. The Nokia business will continue to grow. The company will launch into televisions, microcomputers, etc. Before focusing exclusively on everything related to telecommunications, in the 90s.

It is therefore at this precise moment that the brand will take off. Indeed, Nokia is the inventor of car phones, but also the manufacturer of flagship phones, such as the 3210 and 3310. Nokia then becomes the world leader in mobile telephony, until the first iPhone arrives. Nokia made the choice not to turn to smartphone technology and to continue to produce “low cost” telephones, before selling its telephony division to Microsoft.

Today, Nokia has mainly focused on telecommunications infrastructure, and has even signed a contract for 5G with 66 telecommunications operators. The company has also signed a contract with NASA for the development of a cellular network on the Moon.
