The story of Ataa AYI, one of the most notorious armed robbers in Ghana

Most of us may know him as Ataa AYI, but his full name is Raymond Ayeetey. He became a school drop out when his mom traveled to UK. After sometimes he learned how to drive and became a taxi driver.

Back in the year 1998 he had an accident which destroyed his car and made him jobless. A friend of his who was also a taxi driver helped him and introduced him to his new master known as Eddie in Accra.

Soon he found out that his job was to drive his master and friends to go and rob people. He was unhappy about it,, but he had no choice because he had to get money for her pregnant wife. 

Ataa AYI became a driver for the gang, as they loot people’s cars. They target people who go to the banks to withdraw money and attack them on the way to take their money. They were able to steal an amount of 12 million old cedes in his first operation, which he got his share of 2.5 million.

It was believed that he had charms that protected him from gunshots and from being caught. This made him one of the most wanted men in the country.

He was a very skillful driver which even made them to be able to steal even in traffic. He came to have a lot of power and gained popularity as a notorious thief and gang leader. 

Furthermore, he is alleged to have stolen cash amounting to over 700 million old cedes and other valuables like cars telephones and jewelry. Not only that, but he became so popular and wanted that his name became a common household name and nickname for thieves.

In 2000, there was a lead on his whereabouts, which led to a suspect taking the police to his house. However, he was not found, as he had traveled to the North for a funeral. It was then, he realized that his life, and his family, was in danger. Then he went into hiding.
