The police are being urged to criminally prosecute the soldier arrested for firing AK 47 assault rifle many times at the A&C Mall, East Legon, to ring in the new year.
Flight Sergeant Nicholas Owusu Frimpong was caught on video holding an AK 47 assault rifle and firing live rounds in the air, to usher in year 2022.
He has now been arrested and detained by the military police.
The bureau of public safety, a not-for-profit , is demanding that the officer with the Ghana Airforce is handed over to the police service for interrogation and subsequent prosecution.
Nana Yaw Akwada, the Chief Party of the Bureau, says dealing with the offending officer through the internal disciplinary procedure of the Ghana Armed Forces would not be appropriate.
He raised questions about how the soldier got access to the weapon when he was not on official duty.
In the video that went viral he is seen firing an AK 47 assault rifle many times in the air at the A&C Mall, in East Legon, on the midnight of Friday, December 31, 2021, to usher in the new year – 2022.
The police in a statement signed by Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, confirming the arrest of the military officer said it followed the collaboration between the police service and the military police.
The police had earlier announced cash reward of Ghs5,000 for information leading to the arrest.
According to the police, the firing of the weapon broke the law. The police say it is an offence for anybody to fire gunshots in public without “lawful and necessary occasion under section 209 of the criminal offences act 1960 (act 29)”.
An earlier statement announcing the Ghs5,000 bounty read: “The Police have intercepted a video in which a young man is seen firing several shots of a firearm suspected to be AK 47 at A&C Mall, East Legon, last night, December 31, 2021, purportedly to welcome the new year.
The Police have taken a serious stance against the actions of the young man since it is a crime to discharge a firearm in public without lawful and necessary occasion.
