Magodo: Why It Was Wrong For CSP Oyewole To Refuse Sanwo-Olu’s Stand Down Order

Earlier today, the governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu deemed it fit to visit Magodo Phase 2 Estate where its residents were protesting the planned demolition by some high-profile personalities. The conflict which started around December 2021, had led to the arrest of about 50 residents by the police.

Before gaining entrance into the property proper, Sanwo-Olu made a stop over at the estate police station where he met some security operatives who apparently were posted from outside the state. However, the leader of the police team who identified himself as CSP Abimbola Oyewole ignored Sanwo-Olu entreaties to stand down. Amid their exchanges, CSP Oyewole revealed that he was doing the job issued to him by his boss in Abuja while the governor was explaining to him that he has spoken to the Inspector General of Police and Attorney-General of the Federation.

Looking at the whole matter objectively, I think CSP Oyewole got it all wrong when he refused the Lagos state governor stand order right before the full glare of the public. As the chief security officer of the state, the governor has the right to call to order any security agent if not for anything at least for the peace of the state.

I agreed that CSP Oyewole was right when he told the governor to call his superior, but he would have used his discretion in handling the matter so as not to embarrass the governor publicly. There are better ways to handle such issues.
