A man from Akyem in the Ashanti region shared his life experiences about almost got drowned when he went to the beach with his teammates. Nana said he likes going to the beach and also loves to swim, he was a member of the Adidas United football team at Tema New Town. In 2003, they went to 5 beache at Tema on a holiday to have some fun and do some endurance exercises. That was his first time going to the beach and also did not know how to swim so he was sitting on one of the rocks at the beach.
The team members were playing a ball in the sea to train those who can’t swim well, this motivates him to join them and learn how to swim. They hold the ball whilst swimming and they will be floating on the sea with the ball. Nana was given the ball and someone guided him into the sea, he was able to swim with it for some time, he was very happy but became tired and came back to the seashore to rest. Nana went back to swim for the second time, he was able to swim for about three minutes then he became overjoyed and forgot that he was holding a ball which is helping him to swim.
He let go of the ball and found himself under the sea, something started pushing him up and down the sea. Nana said he began struggling with someone under the sea, then later he hit himself against a rock at the banks of the sea but still something was holding his leg. He then realized that he almost got drowned. The man felt dizzy and was not hearing anything again. One man pushed his forehead to lie down, he then pressed his stomach and water started coming out of his nostrils and throat. Fortunately, he was able to hear again and he asked his teammates about what happened.
They told him that he almost got drowned and they were trying to save but Nana kept struggling with them. One man who saved him even got bruises on his body. He said the first thing he said was “I will not die again” those in his neighbourhood has been calling him by what he said. A man at the beach told him that he was very fortunate because a lot of people have died at the spot he got drowned. Popular criminals tried to escape from the police by jumping into the sea at the same spot, they were found a few days later with some parts of their bodies missing. Nana said he has realized that he was very fortunate to be saved that day and till now he is very vigilant whenever he goes to the beach.
