Shatta Wale’s discography on Spotify shows a staggering 46 singles released in 2021 only, with a total of 207 singles and EPs uploaded on the platform since 2018. His highest streamed song, Already, the collabo with Beyonce, has over 96 million streams.Â
On the average, other hit singles on Spotify that have more than 500k streams usually are collabos, with the exception of singles like Freedom, My Level, Mahama Paper and Ayoo which are his sole compilations.Â
Most of the songs he composed have durations of around 2:30 seconds and are therefore very short listens. Most hit songs usually are an average of 3:30.
With this amazing discography, the problem isn’t the DJs who have to be forced to put his songs on rotation, but rather the quality of his output.Â
With the lift that the Beyonce song gave him, he could have built on it to have massive growth to become a musical powerhouse beyond the shores of Ghana, but in 2021, he wasn’t even in the top 10 Spotify streams.Â
Compare that of his to Black Sherrif, whose second sermon remix released just a few weeks ago has over 1 million streams, and his hit singles having approx 1 million streams each, or King Promise, or Sarkodie who has averagely way more streams per song, with half of that discography inventory, then we see the issue of him tapping into a base that doesn’t have the breadth of his listenership.
To succeed in the music world globally, and to get that recognition, there has to be wide coverage. There has to be branding, there has to be the creation of that X factor and appeal to a wider audience.Â
Sark has done that.Â
Odogwu Oluwa Burna, his protege, has done that, and he has done what a good mentee does, he has taken up Black Sherriff and care carried on the international stage.Â
I saw lots of posters of Kwesi Arthur launching his Album in London, etc, No wonder he was #4 in Ghana 2021 on Spotify after Sarkodie at #1.Â
Some careers cannot thrive if the only way to stay relevant is through needless controversy. It requires conscious management and strategy to go places. We love Shatta, but instead of blaming the game, he should go look in the mirror.Â
His recent have only helped in destroying his brand further, and he is the one pressing his own self-destruct button, all on his own. His fans should tell him that.Â
