Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which a woman takes two or more husbands at the same time. This practice was very common decades ago. Even though some religions and customs permit a man to marry more than one woman, it is described as ‘strange’ if a woman has multiple partners.

Rumors that some women are getting married to more than one man in certain countries have flooded the social media and here are some of those countries:

1. INDIA

India is a country in South Asia. In some parts of this country, there are two major types of polyandrous relationship that are being practiced. They are: the fraternal and sequential polyandry.

Fraternal polyandry occurs when a woman is married to two or more men who are brothers. Sequential polyandry occurs when a woman mates with a male, produces an offspring, then ends the relationship with that male, then she repeats this sequence with another male.

2.. CHINA

In China, Tibet is a region covering much of the Tibetan Plateau. Tibet people in time past, practiced the fraternal polyandry. But rhe woman in the scenario, must not tell her husbands who the child belongs to in order not to create any problems or issues in their family.

While it is now illegal to practise such in Tibet, research have shown that it still happens in the rural areas. Polyandry is present in all Tibetan areas, but particularly common in some rural regions that are faced with extreme living conditions.

3. NIGERIA

Although it is largely uncommon in Nigeria, there are tribes in Nigeria that allows polyandry. Among the Irigwe of Northern Nigeria, women who have traditionally acquired numerous spouses call them “co-husbands.” The Irigwe people of Nigeria practiced polyandry until their council outlawed it in 1968. Until then, women would move from house to house, taking on multiple spouses, and the children would belong to the husband whose house the woman lived in.
