The current crisis in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to be taking a turn for the worse with each passing day.

Not only has the party failed to resolve its internal wranglings and pick a date for its National Convention, but the APC has equally failed to maintain a united front, a situation which has led to the emergence of several factions and parallel congresses across the nation.

While the APC is yet to come to terms with the ongoing power tussle among party bigwigs and chieftains, it seems the governors are also having a serious disagreement over who will emerge as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the upcoming general elections.

According to reports, there are governors in the camp of the All Progressives Congress who are refusing to endorse former Lagos Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s choice to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as the next Commander-in-Chief.

This decision has reportedly led to the emergence of 4 different factions among the state governors in the party.

It was also gathered that certain governors are insisting on one of them becoming the party’s presidential candidate, with a serving minister in the Buhari regime emerging as his running mate.

Meanwhile, the other factions are pledging support for Bola Tinubu’s presidential ambition, insisting that it is the only way to reward him for all he has done for the party.

They have also urged their colleagues not to bite the finger that fed them by shunning the former Lagos Governor, warning that the decision might backfire eventually.

While the names of those who are leading the charge against Tinubu are not yet known, this article, however, seeks to highlight two governors who might be deeply involved in the plot to jeopardize Asiwaju’s chances of becoming the nation’s next president.

1. Yahaya Bello

Since the start of the year, Yahaya Bello has seized every opportunity to announce to Nigerians that he intends to succeed Buhari in 2023.

Quite interestingly, Bello has been quoted on several occasions throwing jabs at Tinubu’s proposed presidential ambition, often citing their age difference as a factor.

Furthermore, the Kogi State Governor has been to Aso Rock to see the president, with the of making his intentions known.

There is no doubt that the former Lagos Governor is the biggest threat to Bello’s emergence as the APC’s presidential flag bearer for the upcoming elections.

2. Mallam Nasir El-Rufai

Though the Kaduna State Governor had made it clear that he is not interested in becoming the next Commander-in-Chief in 2023, it is the reason he gave for his lack of interest that puts him as one of the governors that might be rejecting Tinubu’s presidential ambition.

The former FCT Minister was quoted some months ago saying that at 62, he is too old to become the country’s next leader.

On record, Tinubu is 69 years of age, meaning that he is seven years older than Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

Logically speaking, if the Kaduna Governor believes that he is too old to emerge as Nigeria’s next president at 62-years of age, it is safe to say that he will not support a candidate who is older than himself.

Moreover, El-Rufai is among the Northern political elites who are rejecting the South’s demand to be allowed to produce the next president in 2023.

With Tinubu being a prominent candidate from the SouthWest, it is clear that he might not get an endorsement from the former FCT Minister.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

Will Tinubu’s presidential ambition survive the current crisis plaguing the APC?
