Saturday was a dark day in Kitui County after a school bus transporting choir members to a wedding capsized at the raging waters of river Enziu.

Up to now, 24 people have been confirmed dead from the accident with locals and divers still searching and retrieving those who drowned.

Simon Kea survived the scary and deadly accident after he managed to free himself through the bus windows. Narrating the near to death moment, Kea revealed that prior to the bus attempting to cross the river, the driver had urged the members to remain patient.

The driver had stayed at the bridge for over 2 hours waiting for the water levels to go down.

Kea stated that the driver told the group that he was not confident in crossing the bridge as he was not familiar with the demographic of the area. However, after 2 matatus and a lorry managed to cross to the other side safely, the driver gained confidence and drove to their deaths.

According to Kea, the choir group pressured the driver into making the wrong choice and crossing the river.

Within seconds, the bus was swept by the flooding river and overturned with the choir members and some by passers who hopped in the bus to cross trapped inside.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.
