Ghanaian youth are losing faith in the country’s democracy – Mahama

Ghana’s ex-president, John Dramani Mahama, has warned that the country’s youth are losing faith in democracy.

He added that the main reason is because they do not receive work after election promises have been made.

“The danger we confront is that our young people continue to lose faith in our democracy,” he said, adding, “since democracy doesn’t work for us, why should I come out and vote?”

As a result, the former president asked the current administration to cooperate with all stakeholders, including the opposition NDC, to find a solution to the country’s unemployment crisis.

The issue of employment, according to the ex-president, is a severe problem that has plagued not only the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) government but also previous governments, including his own NDC (National Democratic Congress) administration.

The reason why unemployment continues to be a problem, according to John Mahama, is because the number of jobs produced each year considerably outnumbers the number of graduates from the country’s educational institutions.

“I’ve been president before, and I know that our economy isn’t producing employment as quickly as our educational institutions are producing young people,” he remarked.

The previous president stated that the government alone will not be able to fix the unemployment crisis.

“The solution does not lie in one person’s head; that is why I have always said that as a party, we are willing to join the ruling party and hold a high-level summit on job creation to see how we can come up with a communique on what successive governments must do to ensure that our young people have jobs to do so that we can grow the economy faster and that our people live in decency and dignity,” he said.
