Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim has alleged that forces from the National Security and vigilante group; Invincible Forces, were about to take over parliament yesterday when conflict broke in the chambers. He indicated that there could have been a terrible confrontation between Members of Parliament and these forces should they had gained access to the chambers.
According to him, it took the Police to deter them from entering the chamber, as they were made to understand that maintaining order and peace in parliament was the work of the Marshal. Mr Ibrahim disclosed that it was for that reason that the House of Parliament witnessed the swift invasion of the chamber by some police officers yesterday.
He continued that the reinforcement that came helped to restore order lest what could have happened might be worse than ever experienced. He told Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on Okay FM that the National Security operatives and the vigilante group had no business at the House of Parliament, and as such their presence was tantamount to intimidation.
“Do you know why the House was adjourned sine die? National Security forces with the Invincible forces were going to take over parliament. I took the Police to stop them. They confronted them that it’s the duty of the Marshal, so they did rather go for Police reinforcement. That is why the Police came.”
Of major concern to the Deputy Minority Whip was the disrespect meted out at the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin over the intrusion of these National Security operatives and the Invincible Forces. Mr Ibrahim stressed that in any case, the Speaker ought to have been informed about the intrusion of the security forces before they take action.
“Without the consent of the Speaker. How could you treat a Speaker of Parliament with such disrespect?” he lamented.
December 2021 has witnessed some tension brew in the House of Parliament over the approval of the E-levy. This has raised concerns about how future business will be conducted in parliament going forward.
