The lower secondary education system is a six year program to prepare students for the job market, our educational system has been examination oriented for the past years and the concentration has been on how to pass West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This is the target of students in the country, our Junior High Schools and the Secondary Schools are producing students to memorize content for examination, these students forget the contents memorized after the examination.

The lower secondary education system will produce students to apply theories learnt in the classroom in problem solving, Government is set to begin the piloting of lower secondary education which will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM) as government constructs fifteen new STEM lower secondary schools to kick start in 2022.

With the pilot program, Junior High Schools in a district will be put together in one lower secondary school, students will move straight from basic schools class six to the lower secondary education in the district. These lower secondary schools will be equipped with modern facilities in the model schools for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has indicated government commitment to transform our educational system to produce graduates for the job market instead of half baked graduates produced in our universities. This will help reduce unemployment rate in the country.
