Dr. Kabiru Mahama, an Economic Policy Analyst from the Office of the Vice President clashed with the host of a political programme after making certain comments. It was interesting discussion as Kwame Jantuah, CEO of Africa Energy Consortium and a CPP and Edward Bawa, MP for Bongo discussed the much talked E-Levy. Parliament has been divided over whether the E-levy should be included in the 2022 budget.
In discussing the issue, Edward Bawa noted that negotiations have broken down since the Majority side have failed to agree on the scrapping of the levy. He argued that the levy will only make Ghanaians poor and send the country backward. The MP went ahead to give a litany of the taxes that the NPP have introduced since coming to power.
In response, Dr. Kabiru representing the NPP said that the NDC had done worse by introducing a number of taxes when they were in power. According to him even head porters were taxed and this shows how wicked the NDC under Mahama was. He noted that the NPP have even gone ahead to remove taxes on certain things that the NDC imposed.
Apparently, the issue of taxes imposed on Kayayei didn’t go well with the host who mentioned that it wasn’t true. According to Dzifa Bampoe, who was host, she has no evidence to prove that. She called on the NPP panelist to check his facts again. Edward Bawa MP for Bongo also added his voice and said there was no bill like that from Parliament.
According to Edward Bawa, the taxation was rather from the AMA and not the government. He chided Dr. Kabiru for playing propaganda and called on him to be truthful. According to Hon. Bawa, the NDC under John Mahama did everything possible to improve the lives of Ghanaians as compared to the NPP under Akufo-Addo where only the rich enjoy to the detriment of the poor masses.
