The Inspector-General of Police Dr George Akuffo Dampare has given a retired Commissioner of Police, Mr Ellis Owusu Fordwouh a treat on this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration. The IGP and his officers paid a surprise visit to Mr Owusu Fordwuoh at his cocoa farm in Kwaafokrom in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The retired officer least expected the IGP and his men at his farm today to help him cultivate cocoa beans that have been harvested from this 65 acre cocoa plantation. Mr Owusu Fordwuoh was not just a Commissioner of Police but also a former Director of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB), and a lawyer.

His reputation preceded him, and Dr Dampare was very much excited to join him and the family process the cocoa beans. To some of Dr Dampare’s officers, it’s a novel experience.

Dozens of them were fascinated by the freshness of the cocoa beans and helped themselves to a few pods. The Director-General in charge of Welfare, DCOP Habiba Y.A Twumasi-Sarpong is seen with a plastic spoon scooping fresh cocoa beans.

But Dr George Akuffo Dampare was very busy breaking cocoa pods. He was so good at it, and one could tell without guessing that Dampare has lived a life as a cocoa farmer.

Other officers watched on and learned the process. It was a great experience and the IGP took the opportunity to take some counsel from the retired Commissioner.

The entire load of cocoa pods were processed for fermentation within a few hours. Dr Dampare, unlike his predecessors, has proven how supportive senior officers could be to their retired staff,.even on public holidays.

Mr. Owusu Fordwuoh adds to the list of retired officers Dr Dampare has visited since he assumed office. The IGP in almost all his regional tours made it an obligation to check on retired officers of the Police.

These visits have warmed the hearts of senior citizens (retired officers) as they feel honoured that in their retirement an IGP checks up on them.
