The Ballon d’Or is an annual football award presented by French news magazine France Football that is one of the oldest and generally regarded as the most prestigious individual award for football players.

It has become symbolic among soccer stars and fans with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo winning it six and five times respectively.

While Liberia’s George Oppong Weah remains the only African to win the most prestigious individual award in football, some Africans have graced the podium coming closer to the title.

Essien has been nominated on three occasions with his highest ranking being 22nd as revealed by football journalist, Owuraku Ampofo.

He revealed this in a tweet; “Michael Essien holds the record for the most #BallonDor nominations by a Ghanaian player. The former Chelsea midfielder was nominated 3 times (2005-2007) with his highest ranking being 22nd.”
