President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Anthony ForsonPresident of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Anthony Forson

President of the Ghana Bar Association, Mr. Anthony Forson insists that lawyers in Ghana continue to wear their wigs and gowns to ensure that there is order and formality in the Profession.

There have been calls on the Ghana Bar Association to scrap the wearing of wigs and gowns in court because most people see it as neocolonialism.

People opposing the wig and gown argue that in other jurisdictions like in the United States of America, Lawyers do not wear the wig and therefore, it’s imperative that it is scrapped.

But speaking on Accra-based Metro TV in an interview on Good Evening Ghana Mr. Anthony Forson said he believes Ghanaian Lawyers should continue wearing their gowns regardless of the fact that it sparks neo-colonialism.

He said “I don’t care, I believe it brings order to the bar and there is that formality. When you go to court and you see your lawyer, you say that’s my Lawyer. Can you imagine I come to court with my wig and gown with my books…”

When asked whether it’s for the optics, he said ” yes” adding that “it’s for order.

Mr. Anthony Forson said in 2017, Lawyers in the country at a Bar Conference voted that they want to continue wearing the wig and gown and therefore, things can only change if Lawyers at a conference vote against the wearing of a wig and gown.
