Manchester United had a dream start to the season as Bruno Fernandes’ hat-trick left Leeds reeling after Raphael Varane was paraded in front of the first full house at Old Trafford in 17 months.
The atmosphere was electric as the stadium welcomed a sell-out crowd for Saturday’s Premier League match, and the decibels rose several notches when their new signing was introduced prior to kick-off.
Varane’s arrival from Real Madrid was followed by a breathless Premier League victory, with Fernandes’ treble supplemented by Mason Greenwood and Fred goals as Man United defeated old rivals Leeds 5-1.
The Portuguese playmaker put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men ahead at the break, only for Luke Ayling’s long-range stunner to level things early in the second half for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
The Leeds right-first back’s Premier League goal, however, was merely a footnote in the visitors’ spectacular collapse.
Greenwood scored cleverly from an exquisite Pogba pass, before a hopeful Fernandes effort was adjudged to have crossed the line, and he finished his hat-trick with an unerring finish.
When Solskjaer’s name echoed around a buzzing Old Trafford, Fred added a fifth and Pogba provided his fourth assist of the afternoon.
