July 2 (UPI) — A four-man rowing team announced they broke a world record by rowing from San Francisco to Hawaii in 30 days, 7 hours and 30 minutes.
Jason Caldwell, Duncan Roy, Angus Collings and Jordan Shuttleworth, members of the Latitude 35 racing team, arrived in Hawaii on Wednesday after crossing the 2,400 mile distance from San Francisco.
The men said they rowed in two-man shifts for two hours at a time to make sure they could be in motion for 24 hours a day.
The team said they beat the Guinness World Record of 39 days, 9 hours and 56 minutes, but their accomplishment must still be verified by the record-keeping organization.
Caldwell said the trip was very different from his experience rowing across the Atlantic Ocean.
“The Pacific is very much different than the Atlantic. The Atlantic is very consistent,” Caldwell told KNTV. “But the Pacific is just not consistent at all. It’s much more brutal. Its highs are a lot higher. Its lows are a lot lower.”
