University education is called Tertiary basically because of the advanced study learners pursue and also for the perceived freedom students are allowed to enjoy.

But if you happen to be enrolled at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), it will not take you long to realize that you are just in an advanced Senior High School environment.

Do you know why?

Well, in the various SHSs, we know discipline is key and students are subjected to several punishments like weeding, kneeling and sometimes caning.

While such punishments are deemed fit at the SHS level especially because the students are seemingly being helped to appreciate discipline, it becomes weird when the same punishments are repeated at the university level.

That is why a photo of female students who were asked by their lecturer to kneel for misbehaving has caused a massive stir on social media.

Many could still not bring themselves into terms with the fact that a whole university like UPSA will allow students to kneel as punishment.

What is the essence of University education when you are not free to study but burdened and impeded by several rules and regulations?

Is this acceptable?
