The National Security says it has arrested six Chinese who they claim are involved in illegal mining, popularly called ‘galamsey’, at Sankragua in the Western Region.

They said they also rid the town of drug peddling, gambling and money laundering.

The six suspects apprehended included Chem Gui Bim, 31; Lu Siam Chu, 36; Wu Sao Pui, 41; Yao Sausam, 44; Xue Loan Lua, 30; and Cheng Chun Rong, 45.

According to the National Security, operatives conducted a swoop in two locations in the township, specifically the area behind the fuel filling station and a casino within the Xindi Hotel on the Asankragwa-Enchi road on May 7, 2021.

They said that the owner of the hotel is currently at large and his wife, Xue Loan Lua, arrested and aiding in investigations.

In addition, the operatives retrieved one Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle, an amount of GH¢1,302,990 and half boxes of mercury, six pump action guns, a sidearm, seven excavator control boards, three parcels of Indian hemp, eight cartridges, a laptop, 80 phones and 41 iPads.

The operatives said per their checks, the casino and hotel had been in active operation for almost five years, casting doubts over claims that the Divisional Police in the area had no knowledge over illegal operations in the area.

The statement said all the suspects are also in the custody of the Ministry of National Security assisting in investigations.
