The debate as to who is going to be the first Ghanaian artiste to win Grammys has been an indecisive one. However, Ghanaians have pinpointed some musicians they believe can make history by winning the prestigious award.

Well, some Ghanaians like Fuse ODG and Rocky Dawuni have been nominated for the prestigious Grammy awards but no local artiste has come close.

Speaking in a recent interview with David Mawuli of Pulse Ghana, Skeleton Wan said that he will be the first Ghanaian dancehall artiste to bring home the prestigious award.

According to him, the ‘authenticity’ he portrays in his music gives him an advantage over ot her top Ghanaian dancehall artists.

“For now, in the Ghana music industry, there’s nobody apart from me. For now,” he brags. “Big respect to the legends but for now, I don’t see any competition,” he said.

He picked out Larruso, a rising dancehall star, and blasted him for copying Jamaican dancehall, saying he doesn’t meet his standards.

“Larruso for instance is doing good currently, but he doesn’t match my standard. I have listened to his music and I can see he is doing dancehall but I’m doing the authentic dancehall.”

They are inspired by Jamaicans and they want to sound like them. That’s not how it’s done. You have to be authentic and be yourself. If you listen to ‘Match Them,’ I was me and represented Ghana and the world as well,” he added.

However, he admitted that he can never compare himself to the likes of Shatta Wale since they are the frontrunners when it comes to the dancehall genre in Ghana but believes that with time, his craft will project him in winning Grammy for Ghana.

“We can leave comparisons to the fans but personally, I can’t compare myself with Shatta Wale at the moment. But I know that definitely I’m going to get there and I’m going to be the first Ghanaian dancehall artiste to bring Grammy home.”

He also expressed gratitude to the Ghanaian musicians who promoted and dedicated their lives in keeping the dancehall flag up in Ghana, adding that they paved way for the young ones like himself.

“I want to use this opportunity to say ‘big ups’ to the legends’ Stonebwoy, Jupitar, Samini and Shatta Wale. I don’t want to talk about them because they have already paved the way for us.”
