Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Sam George has advised Ghanaian musicians to infuse some English language in their songs in order the gain international recognition.
According to him, the music churned out by Ghanaian musicians is too local hence their difficulty in winning awards like the Grammys.
He said “our music is too local and should be fused with a bit of English to capture international interests like the Burnaboy’s and Wizkid’s.”
“For music to win a Grammys, it does not only need to be danceable or with good lyrics but rather with proper music marketing structure.”
He went on “our artists are comfortable cooking ‘wicked’ beats, and put on dope lyrics but do not focus on marketing the music.”
During the same interview, the lawmaker said members of the industry were critical of the Mahama administration but have mostly gone quiet despite the failure of the Akufo-Addo government to meet its promises to them.
“The people in the arts industry are hypocrites and do not hold the government accountable. This government during the campaign promised to build a theatre in each region, on the basis of that, all the creative arts players rallied behind that party and four years into the government and not even one theatre has been built. When we ask questions on the track record of the government, you will still have some creative arts people coming to defend it. Even though the theatres have not been built, the creative arts players who will still have a Zoomlion or cleaning contracts or some supply contracts, now become comfortable in their own shoes and refuse to hold the government accountable”.
He revealed that the hypocritical nature of some industry players and they are self-centered interests have made them refute to hold the government accountable for the arts industry’s sustainable development, thereby being more political than the politicians.
