His list came as a response to a post made by Betway on Twitter where they were asking random people to suggest their Top 5 Black Stars players.
Stephen Appiah, who played alongside Asamoah Gyan at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Asamoah Gyan’s controversial penalty kick broke Ghanaians’ hearts, did not hesitate to remove his name from the list.
In his list, he made mention of himself as being the Number 1 best player of the team, followed by the legendary Abedi Pele, followed by Tony Yeboah, followed by Michael Essien and lastly, Richard Kingston.
1. Stephen Appiah
2. Abedi Pele
3. Tony Yeboah
4. Michael Essien
5. Richard Kingson
Immediately after his tweet, Ghanaians on the platform reacted as some lambast him for excluding Asamoah Gyan in his list.
Others are of the view that Stephen Appiah’s exemption of Asamoah Gyan was inspired by the last-minute penalty miss by Asamoah Gyan at the World Cup coupled with how the captaincy was stripped off him and immediately passed on to Gyan.
One wrote; Bias!! Even Asamoah Gyan is ahead of you when it comes to black stars Na how more Michael Essien and Richard Kingson. Because of his behavior that makes people think you are ahead of him but reality you are not close to him. Tonaldo next time be fair!!!!
Another wrote; Based on performances for only black stars, Michael Essien should not be close to this, Asamoah is the best based on black stars. Andrew Ayew, Muntari, John Paintsil should all come before Essien
