A young man called Frank Asare from Manso-Abranse at the Amansie West has shared his experience as a galamsey worker at his tender age. The young man said he started doing the galamsey work when he was in class five, with the help of this work, he has been able to complete Senior High School. He said because of the galamsey work, the children in their Municipality do not go to school.

They rather go to the galamsey site and sort out the gold from the sand by washing it and they are being paid. According to him, the galamsey work has categories, one of them is shanking, they make a metal boxes with a small hole in them and they also fix a woollen under it to attract the gold. They sent this metal boxes into the pit to get the gold. Frank said because there is no job available in their area, so they have to indulge themselves in galamsey work to get money.

When they go to work they can get about GHC100 or more in a day. The galamsey work helped him to pay his schools fees and other things at school. He sometimes leaves school for about one week to do the galamsey to get money and go back to school. It has also helps the youth in their community, but some of them die during the process. He continued that some parts of the work are very dangerous, so they always take care whilst doing it.

The young man again said that some of the leaders at the workplace sometimes used some of the workers for sacrifice to get more of the gold. Frank said that the pit they dug too can fall on the workers and lead to their death. He again said although the government is against their work, they do not have any work doing. It is this work which provides them money to buy their basic needs, feed themselves and their families.
