The chieftency dispute in Bawku in the Upper East region of Ghana continue to claim lifes of innocent people in that municipality. Since the renewed clashes earlier last month, up to ten people have been violently killed.

This compelled the interior minister to impose restrictions on movement in the area which have been in place till date. The wearing of smock as well as riding of motorbikes in Bawku and it’s environs have been banned. But this has done little or nothing to stop the killings.

Two days ago, five bodies were retrieved at various parts of the municipal according to TV3 reported monitored by CitizenOne. All five persons were allegedly shot and killed by assailants associated with the conflict.

Speaking on Midday Live today, a security expert Dr. Adams Bona seemed to have suggested the best solutions to the conflict. According to the CEO of Security Warehouse Ltd, there are two ways to handle the Bawku conflict which is predated to the colonial era.

According to him, the Supreme Court made a ruling on the matter in 2003. He said after the court made that ruling, it was the duty of the Government to implement same through the chieftency ministry. He said until that ruling is implemented, the conflict will continue to live with us.

The second approach which can either go with the implementation of the supreme court ruling or ahead of that, Dr. Bona said is making Bawku a police region. He likened Bawku to Kasoa and stated that, it was good to make these two municipalities police regions in order to curb crime rates there.

“I don’t know what the IGP is waiting for. For how long will Bawku continue to be a division under Bolgatanga regional command? For how long can we keep the millitary there? I believe the solution lies in making Bawku and if you like Kasoa police regions. This will ensure that there are men on the ground every time to curtail some of these troubles”, he concluded.

Meanwhile the police have arrested 40 people suspected to be behind the killing of the five men. Others were arrested for possessing fire arms.
