Ghana’s Covid-19 dashboard is getting richer and richer with each passing day. In the last two weeks, the nation has graduated from single digit cases a day to four digits a day. Health experts say the current surge is driven by the new Omicron strain of the deadly virus.

Many programs were forced to suspension during the Christmas festivity and same is expected on New Year. Many concerts were canceled, beaches were closed at the dying minute, theatres and drinking remained closed and family gatherings were encouraged to be in smaller numbers. This is because the Ghana Health Service believes any large gathering in these seasons will drive the figures crazily high.

In fact, the Ghana Medical Association issued a statement on he eve of Christmas calling on athourity to suspend this year Christmas and New Year celebration due to Omicron.

But there is a missing link. The scientist have failed to tell the cause of this surge. Note that the current surge cannot and has not been attributed to the Christmas festivity because it just ended.

What the health experts particularly Ghana Health Service have failed to voice out is that two weeks ago, the largest gathering ever since Omicron was discovered was organised in Kumasi sports stadium. At least 800,000 people gathered in Kumasi from across every conner of the country for the three day annual delegtes conference of the ruling NPP.

It is needless to say evidence of vaccination was a requirement for entry into the conference arena. This is because virologists have told us that Omicron is highly transmissible and insensitive to the current vaccines. Surfice to say persons vaccinated can still be infected with Omicron and can transmit the infection to healthy individuals.

The question is could that gathering be responsible for the current surge in covid-19 pandemic in the country? Why did Ghana Medical Association refuse to caution the governing party when it was organising that mammoth program where covid-19 protocols cannot be observed? Why is the media quiet over this?

There are more questions than answers. Take to the comments section to help with answers to some of these questions.
