The Omanhene of Kwamang in the Ashanti Region, Barima Bretwum Okyere Bediako II, has been killed alongside two other persons in a road accident on the Kumasi- Accra highway.
A Subaru 4×4 vehicle on which he was travelling crashed head-on with a commercial Toyota Hiace mini-bus. The two other persons, who also perished have been identified as Ernest Osei Obeng and Lydia Asare.
The three had been rushed to the nearest medical facility, Konongo-Odumase Government Hospital for medical help but they could not pull through, died of their injuries.
The Omanhene, aged 41, was known in private life as George Osei Bretuwm, and he was a serving police officer, stationed at the national disaster management organization (NADMO) headquarters in Accra.
The driver of the commercial Toyota Hiace mini-bus, whose name has been given as Bright Otu, was badly injured and he is battling for his life at the country’s second largest referral facility, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Barima Okyere Bediako was driving the Subaru 4×4 himself and he was reportedly overtaking a line of vehicles ahead of him, when he crashed his vehicle head-on into the commercial bus, coming from the opposite direction.
This happened on the Odumase-Nobewam stretch of the highway. Police Superintendent Adu Boahene, the Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), has confirmed the fatal road crash and said their preliminary investigations show that this was avoidable.
“If you look at what happened, although it is still under investigation, preliminary investigations reveal the accident could have been avoided had the drivers exercised some caution.”
He said he found it deeply troubling the growing fatalities on the roads and called for road users to be more careful.
They should heed safety education to make the roads safe for everybody – bring down the road accidents.
