The honourable minister for parliametary affairs Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu risks losing his position as leader of the majority group in parliament if the president and the leadership of the ruling party are to listen to and act on the numerous petitions before them.

The member of parliament for Suame in Ashanti region has over the last few days been attacking the Speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin whom he has been accusing of being the brain behind parliament’s inability to approve the E Levy bill. According to the longest serving NPP MP, the refusal of the speaker of parliament to preside over the bill was a strategy to have it rejected by the minority caucus. He made this remarks in a press conference organised in Accra.

But the pendulum is now turning onto the NPP legistor who is also the longest serving majority/minority leader depending on whether the NPP is in power or opposition. Earlier this week, the NDC General Secretary exposed how cunning the MP is. He said during the election of the speaker, the majority leader pleaded with the NDC side of the house to tell lies in public that Bagbin was not elected as speaker but was nominated through consensus. But the NDC side refused to tell such public lies.

Currently, the hot waters is that some individuals and NGOs including tintanks are calling on the party to change its leadership in parliament. Latest in this call is that of STRANEK-AFRICA which is a think-tank associated to the ruling party.

According to it, Hon. Kyei Mensah Bonsu has failed the Government of Nana Akufo Addo, the NPP and Ghana as a whole hence should be removed. In a statement issued on Friday, the think-tank observed that the incompetence of the majority leader lead to the rejection of 2022 budget at the early stage. It said the NPP MP failed to acknowledge the uniqueness of the current parliament hence did not seek to build consensus at the right time.

STRANEK-AFRICA said if Kyei Mensah Bonsu is allowed to lead the NPP MPs until 2024, the party will make a lot of mistakes that will not only cost them the presidency but most of its seats.

Earlier the NDC MP for Tamale Central Hon. Murtala Mohammed had said the NPP was facing leadership crisis in parliament. He made this statement on New Day show on TV 3 monitored by CitizenOne. He advised the party to as a matter of urgency change its leadership in parliament.
