Following the recent violence that erupted among the parliamentarians in Ghana, a large section of Ghanaians has been wondering why the Ghana police didn’t enter the chambers to put a stop to the chaos. Some have labelled the Ghana police as irresponsible for allowing such chaos to take place without intervening. The Ghana Police Service will also not sit by and watch their good name being dragged in the mud so they drop a press release this evening on twitter to address the recent events in parliament. Police Statement on Law Enforcement Arrangement in Parliament is below.

Following the recent happenings in the House of Parliament, during the 2022 budget debate, some concerned Ghanaians have questioned why the Police did not go into the Chamber to maintain law and order and take action against Members of Parliament who were seen engaged in what looked to many like violent disturbances and scuffles in the Chamber of Parliament. Kindly read more from the attached.

From the press release, the Ghana Police have no authority to enter the Chamber of Parliament to undertake any law enforcement venture and that any such acts will be contravening of the laws of the country. So there is a security unit that consist of the Marshal and his team to handle such occurrences in parliament.

The press release by the Ghana police service on twitter attracted some comments. On twiter user with the name Mr Okyere said ‘’ why didn’t state the exact article or clause so we can all read? no law in the Constitution stops the police. The standing orders of Parliament does or is not above the Constitution which gives you the mandate to be peace officers’’

Khay also responded by saying ‘’ Na if someone’s father who is considered one of the major stakeholders in making Ghana’s laws has decided to fight aa what should the police do???

Instead of blaming the police for the events that took place in parliament, I think we should applaud for allowing the constitution to prevail.
