The much awaited E-levy debate is expected tonight as Parliament is having a full house tonight. The E-Levy has generated so much controversy ever since the levy was first introduced by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta. The Minority in Parliament have called for a total scrap of the levy while the Majority insist on implementing the levy.
Earlier in the day today, Monday, December 20, 2021, Alban Bagbin was in his seat, but later on he had to step out and his seat was taken by the 2nd Deputy Speaker. As the time approached for the debate Mr Speaker was still not in his seat. The 2nd Deputy Speaker had to suspend the house after the Minority had called for a vote on the bill. Immediately, the house was suspended both sides conducted a press conference.
Afenyo Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader noted that he was surprised that Alban Bagbin was not in his seat. He noted that that this is a grand scheme to frustrate the government’s business. He told the press that deliberations will have to wait till the Speaker comes to take his seat.
“Mr Speaker is trying to frustrate us. We don’t know where he is gone to. The Majority were not informed. We have the number s and ready to do government business. His absence is a big surprise. We do not know his whereabouts” Afenyo Markin said.
Parliament is stuck at 137 for both Majority and the Minority. The independent candidate is expected to tilt the balance if he votes for the majority making it 138-137. However, with Alban Bagbin not in his seat the debate will end with 137-137 and this is what the Majority suspect is a deliberate plan by the Minority and Bagbin to frustrate them.
