Road accidents in the country have for some time now increased with the number of deaths skyrocketing. The police have expressed concerns with the IGP meeting drivers on how road accidents can be reduced, but it seems some of the drivers are not ready to change.
One of the reasons identified as the cause of road accidents in the country is drunk driving. Many drivers have over the years been accused of taking alcohol whilst driving and that has caused several accidents adding to the number of deaths. In Ghana, the legal limit for drink driving is 0.08 percent but some drivers take more than necessary.
The MTTD department of the Ghana Police Service was on one of the busy roads in the capital to run random alcohol level checks on drivers who were plying the road. Many of them passed the test but the others had taken alcohol beyond the legal percentage. One of such drivers is a commercial vehicle driver whose name is immediately unknown. When the MTTD officers stopped his vehicle, his alcohol level was 0.59 percent which is above the legal level. He took turns explain to the police officers why his situation was like that.
According to his answers to the police in an interaction with Citi News monitored by BeaNana, a station officer had died and his posters had been placed everywhere. Anytime he sees the funeral poster, he feels like taking Akpeteshie. In the morning before his arrest, the driver took two tots of akpeteshie before moving the vehicle. He begged the police officers for forgiveness but that was not enough because he has fluted the road traffic laws of the country. If the police had not arrested him, he could have crashed the vehicle and caused another disaster in the country. Apart from him, four other drivers including Michael Afful who claims to have taken red wine before driving were all arrested.
ASP Richard Nyarko
The leader of the MTTD team, ASP Richard Nyarko who carried out the exercise indicated that the drivers will be paraded before the court to answer for their crimes. This is a good move by the police because drunk drivers have over the years wasted the lives of innocent persons through road accidents. If such exercises are conducted regularly, road accidents will be reduced drastically. Watch video here
