This is a story about an Indian Sadhu who kept his hand raised for 48 years, in devotion to Lord Shiva. The story refers to Sadhu Amar Bharati.

Sadhu Amar Bharati says that before becoming sadhu, he was Mahant Amar Bharti Ji, a clerk from New Delhi. He raised his right arm above his head in 1973 in honor of Lord Shiva. It is said that the Sadhu continues to keep his hand raised ever since. Despite pain and deformation, he has been holding it up since 48 years.

Aghora Panth is a sect of Hinduism which follows Hattha Yoga and Tantra as their path to God. Hattha yog is a way of religion where a devotee puts himself in extreme pain , suffering or performs tremendous austerities and meditation.

The underlying philosophy of Aghora is in contrast to many other sects which ‘Jagat mithya’ i.e. this world is false on God is true. Aghoris believe that the whole world is created, and hence, is a manifestation of the one absolute God. This world and everything in it represents God, and is composed of the same true ingredient that makes up everything and nothingness too.

This oneness in world view means that nothing can be categorised into ‘duality’ like Pure-Impure , Vice-Virtue etc. everything is same and one. This non differentiation and classification of things forms the very basis of the sect and it’s practices.

Sadhu Amar Bharati has kept his hand raised since 38 years, Indian Sadhus do perform unusual tasks in the name of religion, like sleeping in an up-right position, or fasting for long periods of time. Prahlad Jani is a Holy man in India who claims he didn’t eat or drink anything for 70 years. His case is tested and documented by doctors.

Well I don’t think so that he would be able to use his arm again due to the fact that the blood circulation in his hand would have become very less if not completely stopped and thus all the vital tissues would die and thus even though he keeps his arm down its of no use. Can you do what this man did for religion?
