Accra Hearts of Oak shook off their dismal CAF Confederation Cup performance to record their first win in the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.
The Phobians had been eliminated from the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation after suffering humiliations in both tournaments. Hearts of Oak suffered a 6-2 humiliation against Morocco giants, Wydad Athletic Club over two legs. The first leg ended 1-0 for Hearts of Oak in Accra with the second leg producing a 6-1 score line in Casablanca to finish at 6-2 aggregate for WAC. The defeat dropped Hearts of Oak i to the CAF Confederation Cup in which they were paired against Algeria outfit, Jeunesse Sportive de Saoura. The first leg of that game ended 2-0 for Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The second leg will however not end on a good note for the Phobians as they were crushed 4-0 in Béchar to end the two legs at 4-2. They returned for the Ghana Premier League where they will face Elmina Sharks in round eight of games. They had gone four games without a win. They had only managed three draws and one defeat. The draws came against Legon Cities FC, Aduana Stars and West Africa Football Academy and a 2-0 loss at AshantiGold.
They needed the three points against Elmina Sharks badly to console their fans if they did in grand style. Gladson Awako’s beautiful strike ensured the Phobians will earn all three points from the Nduom Stadium in match day eight. Hearts of Oak now have six points from five games. They outstanding games against Berekum Chelsea, Asante Kotoko and Medeama to clear.
