Policymakers have instructed that no indications of joy be displayed while North Korea honours his death. North Koreans are not allowed to laugh, according to the DailyMail.

The new edict also forbids them from drinking for 11 days to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the death of former leader Kim Jong Il. According to the article, government officials have ordered the population not to exhibit any displays of gladness while North Korea honours his death.

Kim Jong Il controlled North Korea from 1994 until his death in 2011, after which his third and youngest son, current leader Kim Jong Un, took over.

Currently, eleven years after his death, North Koreans are required to observe an 11-day period of mourning during which they are not permitted to laugh or heavy episodic drinking.

‘We must not consume alcohol, joke, or indulge in recreational activities during the bereavement time,’ a North Korean from the northeastern border city of Sinuiju told Radio Free Asia (RFA). According to the insider, North Koreans are not permitted to go food shopping on December 17 — the anniversary of Kim Jong Il’s death.

‘In the past, many individuals who were discovered drinking or inebriated during the mourning period were detained and treated as philosophical criminals,’ they continued. They were kidnapped and never seen again.

‘Even if a tragedy happens during the mourning time, you are not permitted to cry aloud, and the body must be removed when the mourning period is ended.’ People are unable to celebrate their own birthdays if they occur within the funeral procession.’

Kim Jong Il suffered a heart attack on December 17, 2011, at the age of 69, after controlling the country in a ruthless and repressive dictatorship for 17 years. Although the bereavement period for Kim Jong Il is generally 10 days, it will be 11 days this year to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death.
