‘North Is Bleeding’ Protest: Why Southerners Shouldn’t Join The Ongoing Protest

Amidst the wanton killing and destruction of properties perpetuated by bandits in the northern region, youths residing across major cities in the north have hit the street with placards in protest of the happenings. A civil rights group known as the ‘bring it back movement’ has called on southerners to join northerners in the ongoing protest. The group said that Yorubas and Igbos are also living in the north, as such, activists in the south should join the ‘North is bleeding’ protest.

Though southerners living in the north are also affected by the activities of bandits ravaging the region, however, residents of southern Nigeria shouldn’t join the protest due to the following reasons:

Firstly, President Buhari has already responded to the cry of the protesters, as he sent a high-level delegation made up of heads of security and intelligence agency to Sokoto and Katsina state – the delegation is expected to observe the situation on the ground and bring back recommendations that can tackle it.

Secondly, protests such as this can easily be hijacked by hoodlums, who might start killing and destroying properties. Recall how the ‘End SARS’ protest that rocked the nation in October 2020 led to the loss of lives and destruction of properties.

Also, some so-called protesters are already carrying placards with hate statements against the president inscribed on them – this is not how a peaceful protest should go. Southerners should dissociate themselves from such protest, as the government and military are working tirelessly to bring an end to insecurity in the north.
