Today happens to be the 27th time the president of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo Addo is coming on our screens to update us on measures put in place in battling the global pandemic, Covid 19. Ever since the virus broke the borders of Ghana, the entire public health team together with the government have put things in place in fighting the deadly disease. Despite the fact that some died as a result of the condition, great number were recovered and went back to their daily activities. When the virus was in its highest peak, the president put several restrictions and lockdowns to be able to contain the virus so that there wouldn’t be mass transmission.

After the 26th update of the president to Ghanaians, it has been a long time since he came to brief the public about any update. Today, he has made many things known concerning the way forward to clamp down this existing virus that is halting a lot of economic activities and also impeding many businesses.

According to the president, due to the sudden spike of the pandemic there has been a policy concerning all visitors coming to Ghana and travellers travelling outside Ghana. He said there has been measures that is put in place. So all visitors who will arrive in Ghana must be fully vaccinated before they can leave the airpot. Again, a PCR test will be done for visitors within 72 hours and if one tests positive he or she will be treated but non Ghanaian visitors will bear the cost of treatment on their own. All Ghanaians who are going outside must also be fully vaccinated or else he or she can’t travel. He also emphasised that children ranging from 8 to 12 years will not pay for the test.

The President also stated that, all Ghanaians who travelled on the 14th of December and will be returning on the 28th will be offered vaccines upon arrival. Speaking on social gathering like churches, parties, and other meetings, he made it known that we must take lesson from what happened in last year December when people contracted the disease after Christmas due to many activities during that time and non adherence of the protocols. In light of this, all attendees to most gatherings like churches, parties and so on must adhere to all the protocols like washing and sanitising of hands, wearing of nose masks and social distancing. He also said all programmes must be held in an open places to limit contacts.

He also spoke concerning the closure of land borders. He said he is very aware of what many are going through due to the closure of the borders because they serve as a source of livelihood to many but the needful has to be done. He said many neighbouring countries are also doing mass vaccination as Ghana is doing so when they are fully satisfied, the borders will be opened but until then they are still remained closed and this is not the right time to open them. He therefore encouraged each and everyone to get vaccinated because the vaccines are 100% safe and that is the only way to reduce hospitalizations and infections.
