The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II haa waded into the brouhaha surrounding the approval of the 2022 budget statement and economic policy in Parliament and has called for a consensus building to end the impasse in the chamber. He has sent a message to the legislators not to rely on their entrenched positions as members of Parliament to frustrate the government business.
According to the Otumfuo, he is yet to conceive a way government can raise money to meet the demands of Ghanaians except through taxes. It is on record that his statement has attracted public attention and criticisms from the Minority Caucus in Parliament. Some lawmakers including Murtala Mohammed, Muntaka Mubarak and Okudzeto Ablakwa has hit back at the Asantehene for pressuring lawmakers to “accept” government draconian policies.
On the new episode of the Good Evening Ghana show hosted by Paul Adom-Otchere, the verbose journalist walked Ghanaians through the statement by His Royal Majesty. According to Paul Adom-Otchere, Otumfuo made a very circumspect and honest speech by advising lawmakers to support government business.
Paul Adom-Otchere showered praises on Otumfuo over his courage to wade into the brouhaha in Parliament. He indicated that, Otumfuo has exhibited exemplary leadership and should be praised by all and sundry. He said, “This is the good time for him to speak and there was nothing bad for anyone to criticise him. Whatever he said is true.”
Speaking further, Paul Adom-Otchere however registered his displeasure over the third stanza of Otumfuo’s speech. Recall, the Asantehene stated that there are no taxes that are less painful than others. It seems his comment did not go down well with Paul Adom-Otchere who shared a different view on same. He believes some brutal taxes impose hardships on people.
He said, “For this one, I disagree with Otumfuo. Some taxes are very brutal especially VAT and others.”
