The “one teacher one laptop” initiative has continued to generate debate in the media space. The initiative launched by the Vice-president in September at the St. Mary’s Senior High School is aimed at leveraging Information Technology to facilitate teaching and learning.
The laptops however become the personal property of the teachers to enhance their capacity building. KA Technologies Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian-based ICT company was contracted to produce the laptops. However, scores of teachers are outraged by the specifications and price of the laptops. This has necessitated two teacher union groups; Innovative Teachers and All Teachers Alliance Ghana to jointly drag the Ministry of Education to CHRAJ over the procurement of the laptops.
Discussion the “one teacher one laptop” initiative on today’s episode of the NewDay Show on TV3 ( December 13), Jonny Hughes, the host disclosed that a friend teacher of his said that, it is an insult to teachers if he compares the laptops they have been provided with and his iMac. Another viewer indicated that there is no space in the laptops for memory upgrades.
But reacting to these complaints from the teachers, Richard Nyamah, a Deputy Communication Officer of the governing New Patriotic Party said the teachers who want to buy an iMac should buy it themselves. He asserted that teachers are complaining about the cost of Ghs1,500 and how much more Ghs5,000 if the government decided to give each teacher an iMac. Richard Nyamah, therefore, asked a teacher who wants to own an iMac or an iPad to buy it himself.
“Why doesn’t the teacher buy an iPad ( by himself)? Because an iMac you will procure for Ghs5,000. They provide you with this for Ghs1,500 and you are complaining. … You have graduated, they gave this thing ( laptops the government gave to the teachers) and you want an iPad, go and buy it”, he said.
