Some Ghanaians seem not to draw attention away from the brouhaha surrounding the 2022 fiscal year budget that was presented by the government some weeks ago. Many have expresed worries and pessimism over the policies and taxes proposed by the government. It is on record that, some Ghanaians led by Bernard Mornah organised a protest against the E-levy tax.

However, the Finance Minister has indicated that there are no plans underway to either reduce or scrap the 1.75% E-levy tax. It seems this did not go down well with most Ghanaians as the Minority Caucus in Parliament led by Honourable Haruna Iddrisu has strongly opposed the statement, and called for an outright withdrawal of the policy.

Earlier today, December 13, 2021, a popular Ghanaian Journalist and host of TV3’s NewDay show, Johnny Hughes has made a bold statement concerning the electronic transactions levy. He has said that, he does not comprehend the fact that the Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has failed to issue a statement on the policy that is causing confusion between Ghanaians.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia as someone who is on record to have opposed such policy, it would be due to utter a word to explain to Ghanaians. He registered his disappointment over Dr. Bawumia’s silence on the tax, explaining that it is worrying.

Speaking on the “JohnnyBites” edition of the NewDay show, the verbose journalist ridiculed Dr. Bawumia over his failure to arrest the cedi as promised. He indicated that, the weak fundamentals have exposed Bawumia and his government. Reacting to a series of issues including rise in petroleum prices, the infamous E-levy, he bemoaned the increasing hardships on Ghanaians.

He said, “I think the fundamentals have finally exposed this government. Some who have been vocal have gone totally mute. We have not heard Dr. Bawumia speak for weeks. Dr. Bawumia, I do not understand what’s happening in the country. In fact, I do not get the whole show.”
