Biblical Reasons Why Pope Francis Is Right That Sins Of The Flesh Are Not The Most Serious Sin

Recently, the Roman Catholic Church Pope, Francis, came under heavy criticism after being quoted of saying that intercourse outside of marriage is not a serious sin.

The Pope made the statement during a question and answer session with reporters on a flight back to Italy from Greece on Monday. The Pope was quoted to have said that : “Sins of the flesh are not the most serious.”

The most serious of sins, according to him, pride and hatred. The Pope made the statement in connection to the resignation of the Archbishop of Paris, Michel Aupetit, who offered to step down earlier this month after a French magazine claimed he had engaged in an intimate relationship with a woman.

Those who condemned his statement said that he was indirectly endorsing immorality outside of marriage. But a critical look at the the Bible and Pope’s statement reveals that the Pope spoke in agreement with the Bible and Catholic doctrines.

According to Proverb 6 from verse 16, intercourse outside of marriage is not listed among the 7 deadly sins that God hates. Proverbs list the 7 most serious sins God hates as follows: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devised wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

As serious as these sins are, none of them is the most grievous sin. According Jesus in the the Bible, the most grievous sin is what is called eternal sin, unforgivable sin, unpardonable sin, or ultimate sin. It is a sin which will not be forgiven by God.

The Bible identifies it as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. It is also known as the sin unto death. It is specified in several passages of the Synoptic Gospels, including Mark 3:28–29, Matthew 12:31–32, and Luke 12:10, as well as other New Testament passages including Hebrews 6:4-6, Hebrews 10:26-31, and 1 John 5:16.

So, the Pope is right based on the Bible passages quoted above that extramarital intercourse is not among serious sins. The Pope didn’t say it is not a sin. He only said that it not among serious sins in the Bible.
